Obituary for Nancy Jean Mentzer

Nancy Jean Mentzer, age 88, died December 21, 2017 in her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1929 to Donald Harmon and Mildred Smith. She graduated from Waite High School and Davis Business College. In Ohio she worked as a secretary at Owens-Illinois and Battelle Institute.

She married Robert Mentzer in Toledo in 1959 and they soon moved to Wilmington, Delaware when he took a job with DuPont. After her children were in school, she worked at the Boy's Home, management consultants Monkman-Rumsey, and Martin-Marietta Investments.

For many years she volunteered at the Luther Towers dining room and gift shop, at the Emmanuel Dining Room, and at the VA Hospital where she visited with veterans, helped at bingo, and brought homemade cookies.

She was very active at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in north Wilmington, helping with various church functions.

She enjoyed researching her genealogy and was a member of the DAR, having established that an ancestor had served in the Revolutionary War.

A cat lover, she enjoyed taking care of a series of cats throughout her life.

She and her husband traveled extensively after retirement, seeing the US, the UK, and most of Western Europe.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years Robert, her sons David (Celine) of Wilmington, and Stephen of Pittsburgh, her daughter Karen Muirhead (Glenn) of Newark, her grandchildren Christina and Erik, her sister Carol Salisbury of Greeneville, Tennessee, her niece Pamela Savoy (Dennis), and nephews Kenneth (Marie) and Donald (Vicki).

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 10 AM with visitation at 9:30 AM at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 503 Duncan Rd, Wilmington, DE 19809.
