Alena Kratky, 86, of Newark, DE passed away on March 6, 2022 after almost winning her fight against cancer.
Born in 1935 in what is now the Czech Republic, Alena lived a fascinating life. In her childhood, she witnessed firsthand the tragedy of World War Two. She later became an elementary school teacher, married and had a son. The Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 forced her and her family to flee the country, and the USA took her in.
Once in the land of the free, Alena pursued a variety of interests and careers - always helping others, as a fitness instructor, as a school crossing guard.
In her sunset years, Alena served as a teacher’s aide at Maclary elementary, with love for all the children in her care. A lifelong swimmer who won many trophies in her youth, she was well-known at the YMCA pool. She loved art, and became a prolific painter in her later years - known locally for her still-lifes, landscapes, and beautiful use of vibrant colors in oil paintings and homemade greeting cards.
Mrs. Kratky was predeceased by a son who taught her how to paint, Michael Joseph Kratky. She is survived by her son Jan Joseph Kratky, daughter-in-law Susan Kratky, and grandson Ryan Joseph Kratky.
The memorial service will be loving and private, for close family only, as was her wish. If you wish to make a memorial donation, please consider the Ukrainian Red Cross and the American Cancer Society.
Sincerest thanks to all who made a difference in Alena’s life.
Snesl bych ti modré z nebe. I would bring you the blue from the sky.
