Bernadette "Bernie" Brittingham
Wilmington - Bernadette "Bernie" Brittingham, age 83, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family.
Bernie graduated from Wilmington High School. She was a dedicated and loyal tax preparer for H&R Block for over 40 years. Bernie was a member of St. Hedwig Catholic Church where she was a member of the Holy Rosary Society. She was a board member of the Claymore Senior Center and was a member of the New Castle County Irish Society and the Women's Club. Bernie was avid bowler at Pleasant Hill Lanes.
Bernie enjoyed traveling and spending time at the beach with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an avid college and pro football fan. Bernie was a wonderful and caring friend and neighbor to many people and will be dearly missed.
Bernie was preceded in death by her husband Raymond H. "Sonny" Brittingham in 1989; her second husband, Frank Sklodowski in 2012; her parents, Casimir and Josephine Smolka and her sister, Mary McCollum.
Survivors include her children, Bernadette Shutt (William), and Ramona Uhrick (Edward II) and Raymond Brittingham (Sheri); her grandchildren, Bernadette Shutt, Amy Uhrick, Angelique Clements (Ben), Edward Uhrick III, William Shutt, Michael Brittingham and Benjamin Brittingham; her great grandchildren, Alena, Olivia, Noah, and Nora Ruth Clements; her sister, Cas Nagowski and her brother, Joseph Smolka.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, February 8 from 4 to 6 pm at NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. Justis St. Newport, DE 19804. Masks and social distancing will be required along with a capacity limit in the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Tuesday, February 9 at ST. HEDWIG CATHOLIC CHURCH, 408 S. Harrison St. Wilmington, DE 19805 where visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Burial will follow at Cathedral Cemetery.
