Betty Ann (Kauffman) Swain died peacefully on November 18, 2024. She was a life-long Delawarean, born at home in Elsmere to Samuel G. Kauffman and Bessie Craig Kauffman.
She was predeceased by her parents as well as her brothers, Samuel and Walter and her sisters, Audrey and Nancy.
Betty was baptized, confirmed, and married at Elsmere Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Young Girls Circle of the Women’s Society of Christian Service. She also sang in the choir.
Betty was a Girl Scout in her youth and enjoyed it so much that she became a Girl Scout Leader of Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes and Seniors. She also served as Assistant Director of Country Center Day Camp. She was a registered Girl Scout for over 30 years and loved every minute.
She was a graduate of Henry C. Conrad High School class of 55.
She married Marvin Swain on May 19, 1956 and soon after transferred her church membership to Harrison Street Methodist Church. When she and Marvin moved to Stanton they became active members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Betty taught Sunday School, was a member of the United Methodist Women and was hired to be Church Secretary. She also served as secretary of St. Mark’s Preschool and Kindergarten until the year 2000.
She transferred her church membership to Richardson Park United Methodist Church (RPUMC) to be with members of Marvin’s family. While there, she taught Sunday School, joined the United Methodist Women, became a Circle Leader, and served on various other committees. She led a fundraiser to hire a professional to repair the beautiful stained glass windows back to their original glory. While serving on the Missions Committee, she organized a Soup and Pie Sale. Betty loved making pies and would make the dough for all the pies each sale. Over 100 pies were made each sale and she was honored in an article entitled “Cooks Who Care” in TASTE OF HOME MAGAZINE.
Betty enjoyed browsing resale shops and started The Shoppe at RPUMC to raise money for local missions.
Betty loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a happy homemaker and enjoyed entertaining family and friends.
She is extremely grateful to her family who helped her through the years. Especially grateful for helping her and Marvin cope with living with ALS.
