CARL DERBY, JR.
Age 94
Carl Derby, of Willow Valley Retirement Center and formerly of Newark, DE was born in Melrose, Iowa and passed away on August 7, 2016 at age 94.
Carl was a State Farm Insurance agent in the Newport area for 37 ½ years before retiring at the end of 1990. He previously worked for the Veterans Administration for 12 ½ years in Washington, DC, New York and Wilmington, DE.
During WWII Carl served in the Pacific as a cryptographer in the Army Air Corp and as a Chief Clerk in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a life member of the Newark VFW Post 475.
Carl was very active at Peniel United Methodist Church where he became a member in 1946, serving as head usher, chairing the Counsel on Ministries and Administrative Board, and representing the church as a lay delegate to the annual conference. He was also an associate member of churches in Willow Street, PA and in Sebring, FL.
Carl enjoyed golf and was a member of the Newark CC and Golf Hammock CC in Florida. He also enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Circle Four.
Carl was preceded in death by his first wife of 63 years, Kathleen, in 2006 and daughter-in-law, Malorie, in 2016. He is survived by his wife, Norma Derby, and three sons: Brian Derby of Georgetown, DE; Rev. Mark Derby (Joyce) of Olney, MD; and Dwight Derby (Jan) of Newark, DE; 8 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 am on Wednesday, August 17 at Peniel United Methodist Church in Newport where friends may visit beginning at 10 am.
