Charles Gaines

Of Newark, DE died at home on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, with his family at his side, after a 5 year 10 month battle with Multiple Myeloma.

Charles was born in Ocala, FL December 7, 1931. He grew up in Gainesville, FL where he attended Kirby Smith Elementary, Gainesville High and then transferred to P.K. Yonge Laboratory School. He attended Mars Hill Junior College for one year before enlisting in the Navy. Charles served 4 years as a photographer's Mate 2nd Class, making several trips to the Far East aboard the USS Hooper Island during the Korean War.
Charles attended the University of Florida, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Journalism degree. He was proud to be a "Florida Gator."

Charles worked at The First National Bank of Miami, Farmers Bank in DE and retired from Patterson-Schwartz Real Estate after 14 years as head of the Advertising & Communications Dept. During his years there he was responsible for many memorable ad campaigns as well as the famous slogan "The #1 Best Seller."

Charles is survived by his wife Pat of 47 years; sons, Michael of Portland, OR and Casey of Newark, DE; his sister, Marilyn Wetherington and husband Roland of AR; and grandsons, Jacob and Joshua both of Newark. His sons and grandsons were his pride and joy.

For many years he was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and was one of the original organizers of the MS Bike to the Bay, where he was a rider for 12 years raising more than $15, 000. Charles generously donated his body to the University of Pennsylvania to be used for studies for medical education and research.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11am., Saturday, October 31
at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 82 Possum Park Rd., Newark, DE where friends may greet family beginning at 10am.

The family suggests contributions in Charles' memory to MS Society, Bike to the Bay, 2 Mill Rd., Ste. 106, Wilmington, DE 19806 (checks must be made to MS Society)or the Salvation Army, 400 N. Orange St., Wilmington, DE 19801.
