Constant Anton Koers, (Frank) 92, died at Christiana Hospital on December 12, 2014. Born on November 30, 1922, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Frank led a colorful and fun-filled life, a social magnet for those who came close to him.
Frank had one daughter, Loeki Verburg-Koers, who predeceased him in 2011. With no surviving family members, Frank continued to spend time surrounded by friends who loved him. Frank spoke Dutch as his native language, and did a terrific job communicating in English, but it did become much harder to understand him as he aged. But the words and the translation didn't really matter. It was the spirit of Frank that left its impression. You could use your imagination to piece the story together and somehow it always worked. We learned many lessons from Frank that will always stay with us: Don't complain - it's not important - Be thankful for what you have, and enjoy it; Don't be shy about what you want - if you don't ask you won't get it; Be free to express gratitude - there's grace in being able to do that.
Frank was best known to thousands around the world from his work as Maitre D' with the Holland American Cruise Line in the 50s and 60s. We can only imagine the impression he made on countless people with his endless charm during those wonderful voyages. As luck would have it, he made his way to New Castle County during the 90s, where he made another group of friends. We are honored to have known him, and honored to pay him tribute here.
Frank lived the last 4 years of his life at Regal Heights in Hockessin, De. Many thanks to the staff there who showed him so much respect and care. There will be a Memorial Service in Frank's honor on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 4 p.m. at the NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 East Justis Street, Newport DE 19804. His wishes are to have his ashes spread on the Brandywine River, which will be honored. No flowers are necessary. Instead, look for the opportunity to befriend someone whose life you could benefit, and be assured that they will benefit yours.
