Dorothy Goss

d. November 19, 2021

Dorothy W. Goss, the beloved matriarch of the Goss family, passed away on Friday, Nov. 19, one day after her 77th wedding anniversary and just short of her 99th birthday.

She was the daughter of Roy and Mildred Weitzel, the wife of J. David Goss, the mother of Pennie and David W. Goss, the grandmother of four, and the great-grandmother of four more, all of whom will dearly miss marking every major holiday in her company.

Dot, as she was known to friends, grew up in Wilmington and graduated from Wilmington High School in 1940. She then completed a Goldey College secretarial course before taking a job with The War Planning Board.

J. David Goss of Kennett Square, Pa., fell in love with her the first time they met. The couple wed during Dave’s brief leave from Navy pilot training. After the war, they eventually bought a home on Middleboro Road near Newport, where they raised Pennie and David, and lived happily for more than 60 years. In 2018, the couple relocated to The Lorelton, where they safely waited out the pandemic and made many new friends.

During her rich life, Dot served as a member of The Junior Board at Wilmington General Hospital and then at Christiana Hospital. She also was a member of Richardson Park Methodist Church.

Dot was a talented seamstress who amazed her family with her skill. She also enjoyed doing other craft and needlework projects, crocheting blankets for newborns at Christiana Hospital until this past summer. She loved doing jigsaw puzzles, word puzzles, and solving the puzzles on Wheel of Fortune. She also enjoyed the original Magnum, P.I. and eating as much ice cream as possible.

Her family was her life, particularly her grandchildren. She often regaled them with tales of their family history and never failed to shower them with unconditional love.

Sadly, her son David passed away in 2009. She is survived by her husband Dave, her daughter Pennie Smith (Jonathan), her daughter-in-law Mollie Goss, her grandchildren Scott Goss (Maddy), Samantha Goss, Amanda Smith, and Kerrie Allen (Nate) and her great-grandchildren Dylan Butler, Madison Butler, Charles Allen, and Elinor Allen.

Her funeral service will be held at 11 on Monday, November 29 at Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home at 11 am where visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park. Masks are strongly encouraged during the visitation and service, regardless of vaccination status.

The family would like to say a special thank you to The Lorelton and Bayada staff for the wonderful care given to Dot.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude’s or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
