Dorothy passed away January 13, 2013 in the company of her loving family after a brief illness. She was born September 17, 1920 in Paulsboro, New Jersey. She married William Gladstone Owen in 1951, having rekindled their high school friendship while acting in an alumni play. After their marriage, they moved to Indonesia where Bill was employed. Their son, James William, was born there. After Indonesia, Bill was assigned to Australia and it was there that their daughter, Barbara Lynn, was born. They returned to the United States and made their home in Wilmington, Delaware in 1961.
Dorothy will be remembered as a gracious lady with a grand sense of humor. She excelled in her role of wife, mother and grandmother. She was thoughtful and caring towards her many friends. Dorothy was an active volunteer at Luther Towers II and was particularly happy to be involved in a game of bridge throughout her life.
Dorothy's grandchildren brought joy to her life. She was involved in all aspects of their lives. They were the best of friends and truly enjoyed each other's company. She shared wonderful stories about her life, including her pet "Mung", which has become a family favorite. She lived close to her son James and was able to see his children frequently. She regularly traveled to Maine to be with her daughter Barbara's children. Her grandchildren cherish the time they had with their Nana and will carry her spirit with them for the rest of their lives. They are her legacy.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents James and Pauline Moran, her husband William G. Owen and her siblings, Evan (Dick) Moran and Ruth Everline. She is survived by her son James W. Owen Sr and his wife Melody, their children Michael G. Owen, Lesley C. Owen, James W. Owen Jr and his wife Jana; her daughter Barbara L. Owen and her children Callan E. Kilroy, Cara L. Kilroy and Conor F. Kilroy.
The Owen family would like to thank the staff at Christiana Medical Center, Seasons Hospice and the staff and residents of Luther Towers II for their kindness.
Pursuant to Dorothy's wishes, her service and interment will be private.
