Earl V. Nichols, Sr.

Age 79, of Newport, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, after a lengthy illness.
Earl was born on July 15, 1933 in Flower Hospital, Newark, DE to the late Lee E. and Emma V. Nichols. He graduated from Conrad High School in 1951 and from the Eckels Mortuary School in Philadelphia, PA. Earl was the owner and Funeral Director at the Nichols Funeral Home in Newport which was established by his father in 1934. He also worked for the DuPont Co., Pigments Dept. in Newport and Textile Fibers Dept. at Chestnut Run. In addition he drove buses for both Mergenthaler and Gregg's Bus companies.
Earl was a past President and Representative Emeritus of Delaware Ct. #164 R.O.J.; a member of the Ionic Lodge #31 AF & AM, Tall Cedars, Scottish Rite and the Nur Shrine where he belonged to the Motor Corp, The Yacht Club and the Mini Choppers. Earl was also a member of the Minquas Fire Company for 55 years where he served as Chief Engineer for 15 years; a past President of the Christiana Lions Club, where he was a 25 year member; a 40 year member of Newark Elks Lodge # 2281 and a member of Peniel United Methodist Church in Newport. Earl was also the Assistant Coroner in Delaware for 3 years and a Disaster Coordinator of Delaware. He was an avid Phillies fan and enjoyed motorhome traveling and his classic cars.
Besides his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his son, Barry Nichols, his sisters, Joanne Evans and Barbara Gardner; his stepmother, Elaine B. Nichols and his wife, Margaret Nichols. Survivors include his children, Carol White, Earl V. Nichols, Jr. and his wife Kathryne, and Laura Nichols; his sisters, Lois Rodeck and Betty Woods; his grandchildren, Nicole, Becky, Patrice, Victoria, Marlee and Ross; his 3 great-grandchildren; his former wife, Loretta Frisoli and his longtime companion, Jan Nibblett.
Funeral Services will be 11 AM on Wednesday, May 29 at NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. Justis St. Newport where visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 28 from 6 to 8 pm. Burial will be at St. James Episcopal Church Cemetery, Newport.
