A lifelong resident of Newport, Edward went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at age 87.
Ed was the son of the late Grace and James Eckles. He graduated from Conrad High School in 1944. At Conrad he met Helen, the love of his life, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. Ed served with the US Army Air Corp during WW II. He worked at the DuPont Company in Newport where he retired in 1982 after 32 years of service. Ed was a long time member of Peniel United Methodist Church. Ed was passionate about gardening and was known for his "Green Thumb". He was an avid Phillies fan.
Edward is survived by his wife Helen; his children, Judith Lee Eckles, Diane Browne Eckles and her husband Marc Lowthert, and James Edward Eckles and his wife Rebecca; his sister, Grace Terwilliger; his grandchildren, Michael, Grace, Leda, Michele, Jeanne, James, Benjamin, Rebecca and Nathaniel; and his 18 great grandchildren. Besides his parents, Ed was also preceded in death by his sister, Bette Bogart.
Funeral Services will be at 12 noon on Monday, October 14 at Peniel United Methodist Church, 115 E. Market St., Newport, where visitation will begin at 10:30 am. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions in Ed's memory to Season's Hospice, 220 Continental Drive, Suite 201, Newark, DE 19713.
