Barney passed away on Friday, February 13, 2015 in his home.
He was born in Newport, De., the son of the late Ida E. and George S. Benson, Sr. Barney was a graduate of the Krebs School and Conrad High School. He was an office manager for local construction companies, retiring from Erectors Inc in 1995.
Barney was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he served as a Sergeant and then served in the Delaware Army National Guard as a non-commissioned officer and warrant officer. He retired from the Army Reserve as a First Lieutenant. He also pitched a "no hit- no run" game for the DE National Guard semi-pro league and was awarded the Delaware Medal of Military Merit for his accomplishment.
He played semi-pro baseball in Delaware and Texas. He also co-authored a book on the fundamentals of baseball. He coached baseball in the Mill Creek and New Castle Babe Ruth Leagues and was best noted as the coach of the Stahl Post #30 team. He was the first coach in 65+ years to take a Delaware team to the Legion World Series and the only coach to go to the Legion World Series twice. His players were dedicated to baseball and his team set the standard for American Legion Baseball, at Joseph B. Stahl Post in Delaware which still exists today. He also designed the Stahl Post #30 baseball field.
Barney was a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles, Sixers and University of Delaware teams. He visited and traveled to all 50 states, all of the provinces of Canada, the British Isles and Caribbean Islands.
He was predeceased by his brother, Gerry. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Norris Benson; his three sons, Robert A. Benson (Kathleen), Richard L. Benson (Susan) and Ronald J. Benson; brother Paul; sister Betty; ten grandchildren, Matt, Erin, Laura, Rich, A. J., Jeremy, Luke, Christina, Brooke, and Ashley; nine great grandchildren, Sierra, Jack, Tommy, Ryan, Zane, Jordan, Jessica, Sam and Jett.
Funeral services will be 7pm on Wednesday, February 18 at NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. Justis Street, Newport where visitation will begin at 5pm. Committal Services with military honors will be at 11am, on Thursday, February 19, in the chapel at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE
