George L. Kerr Jr., age 75, of Middletown, formerly of Newport, died on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
George was born in 1949 at Bryn Mawr Hospital to George L. Kerr Sr. and Mary Kerr and lived in Rosemont, PA until the family moved to Wilmington. He was a 1966 graduate of Conrad High School and graduated from Del Tech Community College with 2 degrees.
George served in the United States Army from 1968-1971, serving in Thailand, Germany and State Side. He worked at the Wilmington Post Office where he started as a letter carrier and retired as a safety specialist.
George also worked for Professional Ambulance, AMR and Transcare Ambulance. He also worked for Walmart as a greeter.
George was a 57 year and life member of the Minquas Fire Company where he served as President, Director, Assistant Treasurer, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, and Recording Secretary. He was Fireman of the year for Minquas Fire Company in 1989 and State Firefighter of the year in 2007. George was also a Delaware State Fire Policeman and was New Castle County Volunteer Fireman’s Association President in 2001-2002, New Castle County Ambulance Association President in 1988-1989, Delaware State Ambulance Association President in 2005-2006 and Fire Police Emeritus in 2000.
George was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Newport where he was the former Acolyte Director. He was also a member of the Fireman’s Bowling League.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Kerr; and sister-in-law LuAnn Kerr.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Patricia Kerr; daughters, Deidre Kerr and Kimberly Malcom (Edward); grandchildren, Zachary and Cody Malcom; siblings, Barbara Klair (David), Robert Kerr Sr. (Dottie), Donald Kerr Sr., Walter Kerr (Donna) and Cynthia Kerr; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and other extended family.
Services for George will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 4, 2024, at NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 East Justis Street Newport, DE 19804, where visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. Burial will be private.
