Passed away, Sunday, March 15, 2009. Born November 13, 1924 in Wilmington, DE, to Nathaniel S. & Lillian Keith Clifton. He attended H.C.Conrad H. S. and studied accounting at Goldey-Beacon College. He started his business career in sales with Harmon Homes, later apprenticing as a carpenter and starting his own business, Clifton Construction, specializing in fine cabinetry.
As a US Army veteran of WWII, he received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered during the invasion of France, with Patton's Army, in June of 1944. Clif served as Commander of VFW Post 2084. He coached Little League Baseball and introduced his children to bowling, a sport they continue to enjoy. Mr. Clifton also enjoyed golfing, having made a 'hole in one' at Del Castle Golf Course. An avid horseracing fan at Delaware Park and, while wintering in FL, at Hialeah and Golf Stream. He attended numerous running's of the Kentucky Derby. The family spent many summers on the Chester River in Chestertown, MD. He played both the organ & guitar and was a life member of Minquas Fire Company.
Clif was preceded in death by two brothers, Curtis & Robert in 2001 and his first wife, Alice in 1979. Survivors include, his wife of 26 years, Lucy Walker Clifton; son, Curtis M Clifton(companion Lisa); daughter, Karen Merritt(Ken); grandson, Curtis M. Clifton, Jr; sister, Betty C Hobbs; 4 step daughters, Debbie (Joe) Smith, Sheila Evans, Pam (Bryan)Campbell and Linda (Ken) Knox; 8 step-grandchildren; 6 step great grandchildren and aunt Anna C. Hazzard.
Funeral services will be 11am, Friday, March 20th at Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, 212 E. Justis St., Newport, DE, where visitation will begin at 9:30am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Bear, DE.
