Age 82, of Newark, DE passed away on Friday, September 10, 2010, following a long illness.
Helen was born and raised in the Boston, MA area and graduated from Wheelock College. She worked as a teacher prior to raising 5 daughters. A dedicated volunteer, Helen was active in Girl Scouts, Pony Club, League of Women Voters, AAUW, Newark New Century Club and the Blood Bank of Delaware.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Dr. Karen Wolfe of Baltimore, MD; Susan Ballard of Largo, MD; Helen Ashinghurst of East Lyme, CT; Lisa Lanzi-Taylor formerly of Elkton, MD; Lynn Vandevenne, of Orlando, FL; 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandson; her sister, Jean Drake of Phila., PA; and 2 devoted sons-in-law, David Ashinghurst and Anthony Taylor. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Virgil and Ruth Casten, her brother, V. Glenn Casten, Jr., her sister, Ruth Hegeman and son-in-law, Trooper Joseph T. Lanzi, Sr.
Helen enjoyed her 'retirement' years traveling the world, visiting with friends and family, golfing, vacationing in Maine and supporting her grandchildren's activities.
A remembrance service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 25th at NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. Justis St., Newport, where friends may call at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be private.
