Helena R. Jebb, age 97, of Wilmington departed this life on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at Christiana Hospital. A Registered Nurse, she had been active in the profession for 54 years, then devoting time to volunteerism.
Helena was born in 1924, in West Grove, Pennsylvania, to Angelo and Nicolena Roberto. Her father was an immigrant who entered America through Ellis Island. She married John F. Jebb, Jr., also of West Grove, after his service in World War II. John passed in 2001 after 54 years of marriage. Helena was also predeceased by her parents and her sister Anne Mendenhall (Coatesville). Survivors include her son John (Newark), sister and nephew Theresa and Gary Miller (Hockessin), brother and his wife Angelo and Candy Roberto (West Grove), niece Judy Nielsen with her husband John and sons Peter and Brett (Coatesville).
In 1945 Helena graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Delaware Hospital School of Nursing, nursing then being taught at hospitals. For 54 years she worked in doctors' offices and at Christiana Hospital. She spent several decades as a private duty nurse. As a nurse, she lived by the credo to serve the patients’ needs before all else. She was active in nurses' organizations, notably the Delaware Nurses Association, for which she served as Chair of the Private Duty Nurses Section. She greatly enjoyed reunions of the Delaware Hospital Alumnae Association.
After her nursing career, Helena volunteered with community groups, including as an ombudsperson for the Division of Aging. She performed civic duty as a poll worker on election days. She served as long-time Parliamentarian for the Woodcrest Civic Association. She joined a Catholic support group, You Are Not Alone, for people experiencing loss, and eventually became the facilitator. Through early this year, she worked with the Bereavement Committee of St. Matthew's Parish, doing outreach to families who had lost loved ones.
An avid reader, Helena and her husband valued books and education. They instilled their values in their son, John, who entered a long career in higher education.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial mass at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 901 E. Newport Pike, Wilmington, 19804, on Saturday June 25, 2022 at 11am with visitation starting at 10am. Interment will be private.
