Jacquelyn “Jackie” Day, 77, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully on October 18, 2024, at Christiana Hospital after a short illness. She was surrounded by the love and presence of her family members in her final days.
Jackie was born in Washington, DC on June 8, 1947 to the late James Franklin and Irene Elizabeth Steele. She matriculated through the DC Public School System graduating from Cardozo High School in 1965. Jackie received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from DC Teacher’s College (now UDC) and worked many years in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Delaware school systems. She was a born teacher and gifted with the ability to teach any child to read. Jackie loved all of her students and they loved her.
She married the Reverend Theodore (Ted) Day on June 29, 1974 at St. George’s Episcopal Church (DC), and four children were born to this union. She derived great joy from spending time with her growing family. Over the years, Jackie attended many churches and was a member of several United Methodist Women’s circles. She enjoyed knitting, painting, listening to music, working crossword puzzles, watching True Crime shows, and especially reading mysteries.
Jackie was an amazing, devoted, and giving wife, mother, and sister. She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed, not only by her immediate family but by all those whose lives she touched.
Jackie is survived by Ted, her husband of 50 years, her children, Eric Day (Dawn) of Glen Burnie, MD, Nicole Day of Newark, DE, Patrick Day (Victoria) of Salisbury, MD, and Veronica Day of Newark, DE; grandchildren, Isaiah Day (mother, Tramika Barkley), Amirah Shockley, Jaiden Shockley Day, Malachi Day, Kiersten Kethan (father, James Kethan), Theodore Day II, and one great-grandson, Saint Asegbola.
Other survivors include her sister, Judith S. Hutchinson (Rosemarie L. Duncan) of Washington, DC; nephews, Anthony Hutchinson (Rhona) and David Hutchinson (Ashia); great-nieces, Ava Hutchinson and Taylor Burton; great-nephews, David Hutchinson, Jr. and Luke Hutchinson, sisters-in-law and a host of cousins.
A funeral service will be held at St. George's Episcopal Church, 160 U Street, NW Washington, DC 20001 on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jackie’s name to PBS of Philadelphia, The American Cancer Society, or a church of your choice.
