James Johnston

d. May 19, 2023

Surrounded by his loving family, James “Barry” Johnston completed this life’s journey of existence May 19, 2023 after a hard fought battle with Parkinson’s disease & dementia.

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, he immigrated to the US in 1972 where he was an auto mechanic known to many as “JJ” until he retired in 2014.

Predeceased by his parents, Thomas James Johnston and Margaret Mackey Johnston both of Northern Ireland, he is survived by his wife of 37 years, Diane Harman Johnston, children, Stacy (Michael) Wenner, Michael (Ashley) Simpers and Jennifer Johnston, grandchildren Tyler Noethiger, Alexis and Delaney Wenner, Mackenzie, Adam and Kylie Simpers. Brothers Paul (Caroline) Johnston, William “Jackie” Johnston, sisters Wendy (Paul) Dobbin, Jean (Eddie) Gray, Linda (William) Law along with a host of in-laws in the US and an entire clan of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins who all reside in Northern Ireland.

Based on his wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no formal services. In keeping with his passion for his garden, the family will hold an Irish wake to celebrate his life on Saturday, May 27, 2023 between 12 noon and 4 pm in his gardens surrounding the family home.

The Family would like to extend their thanks to the entire Delaware Hospice Care Team for their love and support especially his CNA, Jamie, whose love and care was beyond measure.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name should be sent to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, 2nd Floor, Newark, DE 19711.

In addition, we would like to thank Peter Murdock, Mary Ann Johnston and family for allowing us to stay with them and caring for us so lovingly on our last family visit in 2021 on their beautiful Northern Ireland horse farm.

He always had two homes in his heart both in the US and Northern Ireland. As were his wishes, we will be bringing him home to his native land in the coming weeks, so that his spirit will live with both families forever.
