Age 90, Wilmington, DE, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2010. Jim served with the 198th Coast Artillery in the Pacific during WWII. He enlisted in September 1940 and was discharged in May 1945 as T/Sgt. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Jim was a proud American Veteran who always got tears in his eyes and placed his hand over his heart as his country's flag appeared or the National Anthem was played.
As a member of Teamsters Local 326, Jim retired from Anchor Motor Freight, after 29 years.
Jim was a born-again believer in Jesus Christ who expressed his faith as a member of Bethany Baptist Church, Newport, DE for over 50 years.
Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Rose Harkness in 1968 after 22 years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Ellen Jane Fenimore Harkness; his son, James E. Harkness, Jr.; daughters, Linda MacGaffin (Peter), Susan Ogle (Charles), Robin Alderman, Allison Sparco (Anthony, Jr.), and Lauryn Satterfield (Marc); grandchildren, Lorraine Ransleben (Brian), Paul Marvel, Jr., Megan Elliott (Jason), Lindsay Marvel, Courtney Sparco, Anthony Sparco, III, Connor Satterfield and Isis Harkness; great grandchildren, Zachariah, Nathaniel, Morgan, Marlyn and Madison.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Friday, October 22nd, in the Chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park, N. DuPont Pky., New Castle, DE where visitation will begin at 1:00 pm.
The family suggests contributions in James' memory to Bethany Baptist Church, 410 Denver Rd., Newport, DE 19804; or Sunday Breakfast Mission, 110 N. Poplar St., Wilm., DE 19801; or Life Outreach International (Water for Life) Fort Worth, TX 76182-9986.
