John "Jack" William Day, Sr., Age 95, of Wilmington, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2024.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Norma L. Day; parents, Joseph Harlan Day, Sr., and Mabel Jackson Day; brother, Joseph H. Day; sister, Barbara Day Symonds; and son-in-law, John Lynch.
John, a descendant of some of the earliest English and Swedish families in the Delaware Valley, grew up on the Day Farm on Foulk Road which had been in the Day Family for over 200 years. John was a member of Boy Scout Troop #69 in Talleyville, DE. He helped his father on the farm until he enlisted in the Army where he served from 1950-1952 during the Korean War as a tank driver. He then joined the Navy in 1956 and served until 1960.
Once out of the military, he met and married the love of his life, Norma Lee Day. He became a bricklayer by trade, but his true calling was his garden in which he took great pride. He enjoyed bowling, watching the Phillies, and fishing. He was a very active member of Calvary Presbyterian Church and was a past elder. He made any repairs to the church that he could. He repointed the front steps several times, including once when he was 85.
Survivors include his son, John; daughter, Sharon Day Lynch; granddaughter, Allyson Barreca; great granddaughter, Cierra Barreca; and great-great granddaughter, Freya.
Visitation will be from 12 pm to 1 pm on Monday, June 24 at NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. Justis St. Wilmington, DE 19804. A Memorial Service will follow at 1:30 PM on Monday, June 24 at CALVARY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 701 S. Maryland Ave., Wilmington, DE 19804. Burial will be at 10 am on Tuesday, July 16 at DELAWARE VETERANS MEMORIAL CEMETERY, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.
