John Smith

August 20, 1921 — January 16, 2009

Age 87, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 16, 2009, at his home in the presence of his family.

Smitty was born in Blades, DE, on August 20, 1921, to the late John L. Smith, Sr. and Myra A. Lyons. He was raised in Sussex Co. and was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Georgetown and a member of the NACCC alumni. A veteran of WWII, he proudly served our county in the US Navy aboard the LST 174 participating in the European Theatre which included the North African Campaign, the Italian Campaign and French Invasion.

Smitty retired in 1982 from General Motors, Boxwood plant, after 20 years as a master welder. He previously worked at Chrysler, Penn R.R., Pusey & Jones Shipyard and he helped build the Tidewater Oil Refinery. A man of extensive knowledge of history, he was very proud of his own heritage which included Civil War heroes. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid supporter of politics.

Smitty was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Theresa J. Walczak Smith in 1984; brothers, Wesley and Ralph and his sister, Betty Black. Survivors included his son, Raymond J. Smith, Sr. and his wife Veronica A. of Bear, DE; his daughter, Ella M. Truitt of Wilmington; grandsons, Raymond J. Smith, Jr., Jonathon Lee Smith and Kyle Patrick Smith; granddaughter, Theresa Marie Truitt and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11am, Wednesday, January 21st, at Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, 212 E. Justis St., Newport where visitation will be Tuesday, January 20th from 6-8 pm. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery, Lancaster Ave., Wilmington.
