Joseph "Joe" Dougherty, age 55, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2010.
Joe retired as a SSG from the Delaware Army National Guard in 2000, where among other awards he achieved he was nominated 3 times and selected NCO of the year. Previously he also served in the Army for 5 years.
Joe was a lifetime member of Minquas Fire Company where he served as a director and rescue captain. He was a member of the American Legion Post 10. Joe loved music, the beach, fishing, the Phillies and NASCAR, especially Jeff Gordan.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Sarah Ingram, his biological mother Ellen Westerman and his stepfather Robert Westerman.
He is survived bt his wife of 36 years Philomena "Phil" Dougherty; children; Bernadette S. Crouthamel and her husband Ryan and Joseph " J.C." Dougherty and his wife Michelle, grandchildren; Jordan and Gavin, brothers; Paul Dougherty, Kevin Dougherty and Keith Dougherty and his sister Peggy Dougherty and his beloved dog "Blondie".
Funeral services will be noon on Monday, September 13 at NICHOLS-GILMORE FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. Justis Street, Newport, where visitation will begin at 10:30am. Burial with military honors will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
The family would like to thank the staffs of Heartland Hospice House and Christiana Care, Floor 5A, for their kidness and care.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions in Joe's memory to the Dougherty Grandchildren Educational Fund at any Wilmington Trust Bank.
