Kenneth Wesley Sanders Sr.

May 7, 1960 – August 20, 2017

Kenneth (Kenny) Wesley Sanders Sr. went home to be with the Lord August 20, 2017 while surrounded by family. Kenny was born on May 7, 1960 in Wilmington, DE to Edith Maclary and Harland Wesley Sanders.
Kenny worked as a nuclear field engineer in his early adult years and then was an assistant chef at his parents’ restaurant “Memories” as well as other restaurants before retiring. Kenny would say that one of the proudest times in his life was when he was the catcher for the Delaware team that represented the Mid-Atlantic Region in the 1975 Babe Ruth World Series in Little Rock, Arkansas. While a serious injury ended his hopes to play pro ball he continued to play softball through his early adult years as well as coach his children in baseball. Kenny was the Christian Education Director for the Kingswood United Methodist Church in the late 1980s.

Kenny had a passion for thoroughbred horse racing and spent many hours at the tracks caring for the horses. He loved flowers, animals, cooking, fishing, going on boat rides, and taking trips to Florida. Kenny was an avid sports fan and loved the Phillies and 49ers. He will always be remembered for his charming, caring personality who was always willing to help a friend in need.

Kenny is survived by his wife of 35 years, Amy C. Sanders, his four children, Stefanie Sue Sanders and her boyfriend Steven Rawding, Nicole Renee’ Minker, Kenneth W. Sanders Jr. and his girlfriend Gina Gentry, and Brian Thomas Sanders and his girlfriend Nicole Boyer and his twelve grandchildren: Alexis, Peyton, Mackenzie, Logan, Parker, Destiny, Jayden, Caitlin, Brian Jr. Vincent, Lillyanna, and Skylar; his parents Edith and Harland Sanders, brothers: Chuck Sanders, Wes Sanders and his wife Janet, Bob Sanders and his wife Lisa; and many other relatives.

Family and friends are invited to visit Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home at 212 East Justis Street in Newport on Friday, September 1st at 10 AM to share memories with the family. The funeral service will directly follow at 11 AM.

Kenny’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Christiana Care and the University of Maryland for their outstanding care and support. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Organ Transplant Program at the University of Maryland.
