Mary Lu Jernigan, age 79, departed this earthly life on January 1, 2024, just a few hours before her 80th birthday.
Mary Lu was born in Elkins, West Virginia to Jerry and Virginia (Gilbert) Jernigan. She grew up in west Texas. Even though she spent most of her adult life in the northeast, she had a profound love for all things Texan, such as country music and cowboy boots.
Mary Lu is preceded in death by her brothers, Dick, and Fred Jernigan. She is survived by her son Richard Schumeyer, daughter in law Sheri, granddaughter Anna, and several lifelong cherished friends that miles could not separate.
One of Mary Lu’s great joys in life was her beloved pet cockatiel. Jamie was her constant companion.
Mary Lu was a woman of great faith, always trusting that God would provide for her. We take comfort in the knowledge that she has found eternal peace in the arms of her Savior.
A memorial service will be held at Faith Presbyterian Church, 720 Marsh Road, Wilmington DE 19803, on Saturday, January 13th. Visitation will begin at 10:30 am, with a service at 11:00 am, followed by a light reception.
