Maureen J. O'Brien Caron, Age 85 of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2009 at her home in Wilmington.
She was born Margaret Mary McEwen, daughter of John and Mary McEwen, in the hamlet of Lady Margaret Manor near Doddington, County of Kent, England. She immigrated to the United States in 1930. She was raised by John and Jane O'Brien her great uncle and aunt, took the name Maureen Joan O'Brien and became a US citizen.
She graduated from Saint Peter Cathedral School, The Ursuline Academy, and Goldy-Beacom College. She worked in insurance and investment businesses in Wilmington and was a dedicated mother raising four children. She was a member of Saint Peter's choir and was a soloist at Friday night Benedictions.
Maureen was a member of the American Turners Wilmington Club, where she was a gymnastics coach and judge. She also participated in the Turners' cultural programs, winning a gold medal in the Individual Vocal Category in June 1963 at the 41st National Festival of the American Turners in Cleveland, OH. She also taught gymnastics at the Wilmington Boys Club Jackson Street Branch.
She was a lifelong resident of West Center City Wilmington. A member of the WCC Neighborhood Association during the 1960's and 1970's; she was involved with the grassroots movement for Wilmington's Urban Renewal and Model Cities Programs. She was known to many in the community as a caring and compassionate person. For years Maureen also lovingly cared for abandoned and mistreated cats in Wilmington.
Maureen is survived by four children, Nanci Caron of Napa CA, John Caron of Raleigh NC, Marie Caron of Wilmington DE and Paul Caron of Wilmington DE; and 5 grand children. Her former usband Emery B. Caron preceded her in death.
A memorial Mass will be held Sat. Sept. 12th, Saint Hedwig Roman Catholic Church, 408 S. Harrison Street, Wilmington, DE. 19805
