Neil M. DeMatt, Sr, age 88, of Newark, formerly of Hazelton, PA went to be with The Lord on Friday, March 18, 2022.
Neil graduated from Hazelton High School in 1950 and then from The University of Delaware in 1969 with his bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He served in the United State Navy Reserves for 30 years as a Chief Petty Officer. Neil worked at Hercules and Esso and Shell Gas Stations as a mechanic for 34 years before retiring in 1989. He then worked for the State of Delaware Division of Public Health for 10 years.
Neil was an active member of St. John Holy Angels Church and the Knights of Columbus, St. Michaels Council. He enjoyed 2 x 4 square dancing.
Neil was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Jane F. DeMatt; brother, James DeMatt and son in law, Buster Branch.
Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Joanne DeMatt; his children, Marie Howell (Thomas), Neil M. DeMatt Jr. (Deborah), Janet Branch, Regina Blackway (Mark), Michael DeMatt (Amy), Todd Sowinski (Christine), Eric Sowinski (Jennifer) and Jon Sowinski; 23 grandchildren, including Gabriela Sowinski and Jewel Sowinski, who he raised; 26 great grandchildren and his brother, Enrico DeMatt (Carol).
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Friday, April 8 at HOLY ANGELS CHURCH, 82 Possum Park Road Newark, Delaware 19711 where visitation will be held from 9:30 am to 10:45 am. Burial with Military Honors will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1 pm.
