Paul Andrew Skibinski passed away Saturday March 2, 2013 in the presence of his family at the Heartland Hospice House. He was 55.
Paul waged a courageous battle with melanoma. Paul, a warrior bodhisattva, dedicated his life to the meditative practices allowing him to face both life and death with a courageous, open, vulnerable and wounded heart. Paul embraced his family and friends giving each the wisdom and courage to embrace each and every moment of their lives, both the joys and the pain, always understanding that both are equally to be embraced as part of life. Paul's own practice was deepened and strengthened by his study with mentor and friend Brother David.
Since 1985, Paul has been the head gardener of the 17 acre garden, Ashland Hollow. In 1976, he graduated from Glasgow High School where he managed the green house, was head of the horticulture club and took classes in horticulture. He attended the professional gardener training program at Longwood Gardens, graduating in 1980. The same year he received the North American Certificate in Gardening from the American Association of Botanic Gardens and Arboreta.
His knowledge of plants was encyclopedic and his imaginative use of them was continually inspiring. Visitors to the gardens of Ashland Hollow were privileged to a multidimensional experience that they never forgot.
His grace with the natural world was only paralleled in this love and dedication to the arts both in image and word. Paul was a photographer, painter and a poet. His pen and ink drawings of his battle with melanoma coupled with the beauty of his words allows his kind, wise and gentle spirit to abound and flourish..
