Peter Grehawick, 91, passed peacefully on Monday. August 8, 2011, with his children, grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren at his bedside. Pete was a lifelong Delaware resident, having lived in Woodcrest for more than half a century.
He was born on December 18, 1919 in Chester, PA, one of twelve children. He was active in school, community and church organization. He and his wife, Doris, were sixty year members of Peniel United Methodist Church. In addition, Pete was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Pete was an avid golfer. Although far from being the world's best golfer, he earned his place in the "Hole in One" Club at Hercules Country Club.
Pete was very proud of the 42 years that he worked for Hercules. He spent the last fifteen years of his career as a Plant Construction Superintendent, responsible for new plant construction both in this country as well as in Europe and Asia. He was a very out-going man who made friends easily and permanently wherever he traveled. He looked forward to and enjoyed the annual reunions of the Hercules Engineering Department, as well as to visits from colleagues he met in his assignments in this country and abroad.
Pete served as a heavy machine gunner with General George Patton's 3rd Army at the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944-1945, and he was fighting in Austria right up to the surrender of the German Army in May 1945. He was scheduled for deployment in the invasion of Japan in November 1945, but he was spared this frightful proposition by the surrender of the Japanese in September 1945. His place among the members of The Greatest Generation was well and honestly-earned.
Pete and his wife, Doris, who passed away in December of last year, were married for 70 years. Pete also was predeceased by his son Raymond in 2001, whose widow Lorraine now lives in Charleston. He is survived by his daughters, Linda D. Reilly (Steve) and Mildred R. Taylor (Bill); his 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and a sister, Mary Emery.
Pete Grehawick was a good and honorable man of the highest integrity. He was loved, and he will be dearly missed by his many friends and family members. Pete's family wishes to thank the staff at Windsor Place and Heartland Hospice for the loving and caring support they provided in his last days.
Services will be 11:00 am, Friday, August 12th, at Peniel United Methodist Church, 115 E. Market St., Newport, DE 19804, where visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery, Lancaster Ave. & DuPont Rd., Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, Pete's family requests that donations be made to Peniel Methodist Church.
