Walter Sloney

January 24, 1945 — September 3, 2013

Walter J. Sloney, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, PA, on January 24, 1945, to Mary Oliver Sloney and Walter J. Sloney, who welcomed him when he went home to Our Lord on September 3, 2013. His baby brother John Paul and sister Carol Ann, along with his aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, surrounded him as his soul returned to Heaven.

The first 50 years of Walt's life were spent in Pennsylvania. His mother moved to Warminster, PA, during WWII, as her husband fought in Europe. There they raised their children until a community called Levittown sprung up in the 1950s, and they relocated to their new home.

Walter went to St. Michael's elementary school and then to Woodrow Wilson High School in Levittown. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, and although he served only a short time (due to circumstances beyond his control), he received an Honorable Discharge.

Walt (sometimes known as "Jr.") enjoyed life and was a great story teller with a tendency to embellish the truth a tad. His heart was good and kind, and he loved his family. He had a quick, somewhat dry sense of humor and was always ready with a comeback line.

After relocating to Delaware in the early 1990s, he worked various jobs. Walt was retired from Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, where he worked for many years. He enjoyed working at the flea markets as a hobby, but due to illness in the past 5 years, was unable to continue. He loved watching football and baseball (especially the Eagles and the Phillies) and enjoyed most sports. Horse racing and the casino were favorite pastimes, too! He could give you the "up to the minute" news and loved to debate every aspect of the political arena. You were okay as long as you agreed with him, but that was the Walter we loved...strong in his convictions and determined to get the message across.

His last years were spent in Milford, DE, and he enjoyed visiting his sister Barbara in her Wilmington home, especially on holidays. Maryanne Griscavage, of Wellsboro, PA, and Barbara Cimino, of Wilmington, DE, will cherish the memories of their "little brother" and thank God for the blessing of having him in their lives. He is also survived by his nephews, Michael and Charles; nieces, Darlene, Susan, Debbie, and Lisa; and many great nieces and nephews.

May God grant him eternal rest.
