Age 89, died at the Methodist Country House in Greenville, DE, on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2009.
Bill, who was a resident for over 40 years of Windy Hills in Newark, was born and raised in Huntington, West Virginia. He first attended Marshall University in Huntington and received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. During World War II, Bill worked as an engineer for the General Electric Company helping to design propulsion and power systems for aircraft carriers. At the end of the war he wed Una Ethel MacKenzie of Huntington. Bill and Una celebrated the 54th anniversary of their marriage before her death in 1999. In the 1950s, Bill moved to the DuPont Company where he worked for over 25 years until his retirement in 1982. In retirement, Bill, who was a long-time member of St. James Episcopal Church in Newport, continued his work as a vestryman there and also worked as a volunteer and guide at both the Delaware Museum of Natural History and the Hagley Museum. At the Hagley Museum he also portrayed a nineteenth century mechanic as part of the historical re-enactments put on there. In addition to being a mechanical engineer, Bill was a skilled carpenter and handyman, who built most of the furniture in his family's home as well as carving birds and constructing miniature furniture for pleasure and profit. He also singlehandedly built in his backyard a 30-foot ferro-cement cabin cruiser pleasure boat, the Lady Una (named after his wife) which he sailed for a number of years on the Chesapeake Bay. He enjoyed playing ping-pong, tennis and golf and was a past member of the Louviers Country Club for many years. Bill was also a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite.
Bill was the son of the late Clarence and Nellie Dickey. Survivors include his 2 sons, William, Jr. and. his wife Tricia, of Winter Springs, FL; and James of Alexandria, VA; and his 3 grandchildren by William, Breck Nicole Hassett of Port Washington, NY; James Joseph Hayes Dickey of Winter Park, FL; MacKenzie Lauren Dickey of Boston, MA; and James Joseph Dickey of Winter Park, FL; and 1 great-granddaughter, by Breck Nicole, Hayes Emmaline.
Memorial services will be 10:30 am, Friday, May 29, at the Danby Chapel, at the Methodist Country House, 4830 Kennett Pike, Wilmington. Burial will be private.
