Age 77, of Newark, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 in the presence of his loving family.
Bill attended St.Paul's grade school, Wilmington High School and the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the USMC during the Korean War. Bill worked for the DuPont Company for 37 1/2 years before retiring in 1991. He spent the first 23 years of his career with the Film Department, ten of them in Dallas, TX. He subsequently worked for other departments as a specialist in export, then refrigerated warehousing.
Bill was an active member of St.John's-Holy Angels RC Church where he and his wife Pat served on the Bread Baking Ministry and as Eucharistic Ministers and where he was a former member of the choir.
Bill was a past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was a pastoral Minister at the Christiana Hospital, he and Pat served meals monthly at the Hope Dining Room in Newark, he attended and recruited for the Arch Bishop Fitzmaurice Group G017 at the Malvern Retreat House, he served as both past Vice-President and past President of the Serra Club of Wilmington and he was a volunteer for "Wheels" of New Castle County Senior Services.
Bill was preceded in death by his brothers, Bayard, Harry and Vincent. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia Lyons Howell, children; William T. Howell, Jr. (Barbara), Thomas P. Howell (Marie), Robert J. Howell (Deborah), Sheila H. Oscar (Thomas), Linda H. Shopa (Thomas) and Kathleen H. Young (John); his 25 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren brought him great joy; siblings Doris Thornton (Charles), Donald Howell (Mary Lou), half sister Mary Jane Borowka and half brother Harold Howell.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Tuesday, December 29th at Holy Angels Church where visitation will be on Monday, December 28th from 6 to 8pm and Tuesday beginning at 10am. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery, Kirkwood HWY, Wilmington.
